“Dolphin Tale” – Winter the Dolphin
In 2012, Team 79 Krunch had the opportunity to showcase FIRST® and STEM with a visit by our robot to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, home of the star of 'Dolphin Tale', Winter the Dolphin. FIRST® Team 79, shown on three different news stations, was seen throughout the Tampa Bay area, relaying the message of FIRST® to over 1 million residents. ABC-TV “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition”
Team 79 Krunch was contacted by ABC-TV to participate in an episode of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” featuring the Dolan family in Seminole, FL. Team 79 Krunch’s assignment was to transform a 12- by 14-foot bedroom into a cyber-wonderland for 12-year-old Charlie Dolan whose father was shot and blinded in a shooting rampage at a local RadioShack.
With only one week to complete, Team 79 Krunch feverishly worked to create its designs for Charlie's room, which featured a 5-foot remote-controlled robotic arm mounted from the ceiling. It hung over a 10-foot L-shaped clear acrylic desk. Under the desk's hinged top is a playing field with several miniature robots Team 79 Krunch’s students built.
